little by little

i wanna learn to love you little by little
as if you were a pack of skittles
filled only with the colors i’ve never tried
which i end up liking more than any one i tasted before
i wanna learn to love you little by little
as if you were a weird math book written by an ancient greek
that i don’t understand and will never fully understand
but which i read every night because
i like the sound of the word hypotenuse
coming out of my mouth
and because i like to know
that there are still many things unknown to us
i wanna learn to love you little by little
like my mother and my father once did
like a sailor learns to love his tattoos
like a coffee machine loves coffee beans
like a baby turtle coming out of its little egg
learns to love the blue ocean in front of it
and learns to crave for the waves and the sunlight
warming up the hardness of its shell
i wanna learn to love you little by little
because if i learn it all at once
i might lose sight of all the small things
that make you the way you are
and i don’t want to be spared from discovering you
and from finding out why you make me feel
like i wanna learn to love someone again
little by little.
