Moments By the Fire

Tucked in your armchair
Positioned next to the fire
At peace in the halo of warmth
Listening to the crackle and hiss

Maybe you had a blanket covering your knees
Maybe that familiar beanie on your head
For sure your eyes were closed
Your body tranquil

Contented by the fire
Perhaps a brief moment without pain
A change from the rest of the day
Where the hours administer a singular decline

I wonder how it feels
Never waking to feel any better
To know you have so little time
To feel your body and soul disintegrate

And yet with time running out
There was still plenty to contemplate
I imagine it became too much
Your spirit hampered by its shell

Those peaceful moments by the fire
Where you could slip into oblivion
Retreat into the gentle blackness
The irony of life offering a kind respite.
