Black Friday has been co-opted as a marketing scheme
that begins as early as July. No longer Thanksgiving
for feasts and love ones, sitting at the dinner table.
Greed demands sovereignty over its sycophants.
And the prostitution of Christmas? That starts in October.
We are barely finished pimping out goblins and ghouls
for Hershey’s and Russell Stover’s before it’s time
to offer Joy to the World through deep, deep discounts
on Air Jordan Retros or iPhone 7’s. And the new year?
It rings in spring, resurrection of Christ,
new whites sandals, pink Easter dresses,
and holiday services for sinners and saints alike,
filling pews after our four-month hiatus.

And God?

What part does this deity play in these nationally
sanctioned moments of greed for greed’s sake?
Perhaps He sees us for who we are
and stays away,
silently weeping
for mankind.
