One January Afternoon

We tried to free

the Santa statue buried in deep snow.

The neighbors brought in their Christmas decorations

weeks ago.

Ours will have to wait

for a thaw.

We took a fast walk in the cold,

the wind a sharp blade and we

mere dough.

Now I sit blanket-wrapped

hot cocoa in hand

a song from last night plays

in my head.

The sunshine sparkles.
