one night only

beneath bright lights
the clown begins
juggling his knives
hypnotically enticing
onlookers hearts and minds
reflections dance
exposing every blemish
needling every lie
he wittily critiques
our simple ways
our ugly pride
revealing contradictions
brimming with hypocrisy
the audience roars
in cheerful affirmation
blissfully unaware
of the joke
which has been played
blind to the disdain
he bows to admiration
then swiftly leaves the stage
