with Jameson and Baileys in my cold brew coffee.

Mounting anticipation of stress melts away with every gulp
of that heavenly nectar that is alcoholic caffeine.

A second cup?

The heat of the zoo pacifying the prisoners
and exhausting the true animals, moving in herds
between misting stations and crowded bathrooms —
mouths greasy with popcorn butter,
fingers orange with cheese dust.

Becoming an animalistic onlooker to celebrate
the birthday of someone you love,
even if you don’t completely like them
now that the alcohol-caffeine cocktail
fades into social-anxiety sobriety.

Tolerating people you care about
when they’re wearing you thin —
dysfunctional family tradition.
