Pride and Pain

We meet them one by one.
We say:
“Thank you for your service.”
(in World War II, Korea, Vietnam,
Iraq, Afghanistan and more)

Here at the national VFW convention,
the vets are with proud supporters.
They are with people who can understand
their deeds
their sacrifice
their pain.

Some of their pain is visible.
We see hearing aids widely worn,
and booths with phones that spell out the words
of children and grand-children in big letters,
when even hearing aids are no longer enough.

Some of the pain is invisible,
As when we describe our P.T. Calm supplement
for stress relief and mood support,
and a wife says:
“He could really use something like that.”

Note: Written after the 2017 VFW National Convention.
