Ruined for Carefulness

the poem
with the luscious lines:
we eat sweet
cold plums
the ones left in the icebox
juice runs down our chins —
ruins us for carefulness
calls out from her cloistered pages
she forgot this
is her poem, the one she wrote
in conversation with William Carlos Williams
because she wants
to be simple
and profound like that
able to render
white chickens
red wheelbarrows
and raindrops
into glistening intimacies
ordinary enough
to stumble into, accidentally
when you’re not looking
where you’re going
