Sandstone Dervishes

on a single afternoon where horse thieves
once hawked in hidden bazaars, dusty bins
stony fingers praying sandstone dervishes.

The line proclaimed the ascent
vanguards shadowing the narrow defile
carabiner hitch, like a donkey braying
with each careful clench, pushing upward.
