Something I have Always Known

That Tuesday afternoon in August — just before you went away — when you said I love you and I said I love you too — I didn’t understand then — what you needed me to say.

You thought I guess that I was thinking you had done me wrong — and there were times that’s what I thought — it’s true — it’s something everybody knew — you’d made no secret that you slept around.

But no one knew the other side of things — the years I had so little time to be with you — the times I looked at you but didn’t see you anymore — the times I couldn’t see behind the smile you wore — to know the pain you felt inside.

And yet I think you had no doubt about how deep a love I had for you — and at the last you just wanted to be sure I knew — in spite of everything — how much you loved me too.

Too bad every scene in the movie we call life is a live and final take — no way we can erase a sad mistake — no matter what the chance we may have blown.

Otherwise I’d ask to do that final scene with you again — and when you said I love you — I would say I know my love I know you do — it’s something I have always known…
