Saint Francis of Assisi by Jusepe de Ribera, 1642

These winds on high, heed them!
Those scorching words, read them!
Do you not forsake, need them?
Past lies before, believe them?

Prophets of hell?
An unlikely fate!
Open your arms to love
The opaline gate

What are preachers but vipers?
What are popes but liars?
What are teachers but mires?
(It’s time we braved the fires)

Where there are prophecies, they shall fall
Where there are heresies, to redeem them all
Caught by the arms of tomorrow’s song
Embraced by the love of eternal calm

Why seek so much for yourself?
These things here pass to nothing else
A wanton world to stay the drift
The sands are ready to begin their shift

In a world of plenty we have no alms
Grieving sighs, needless qualms
See the love in every eye
Stay yourself open to the sky!
