Strudel

The house did not quite top the hill
but still, it was a tiny temple
we ground nuts, brown sugar, spices
raisins for the sweet and inner part
and the dough rolled paper-thin
fine and dainty like a flower
filled the holy chapters leaf by leaf
the pan brimming over —
grandmother, grandson, summer-joy
