Sudden Storms

There on the board, name impressed
- a donation, a ringing bell,
symbol of civic pride, trampled
by nameless unshod feet,
over narrows and through
the sickly salty air.

In the wash, driftwood wrecked
- from the Titanic? from the Lusitania?
more ordinary things find
themselves in the surf,
forgotten by trekkers
dodging back to parking lots
soaked by sudden storms.

Born in the peachtree wilds, passing through lands east and west, martin settled on a nutmeg plantation to live out his days contemplating the mysteries of life
