(A Lament of Mary)

I have stored so many things
deep in the wells of my heart.
Who could imagine that the weight
of so much wonder would explode
the center of my gravity?

Rachel weeps in Ramah, still
and I with her from this place
on a hill outside the gates
as tears flow from his father’s face.

The sky turns dark, but I must look
to see the thing no mother should.
And I cry out with my son’s voice:
Eloi, lema sabachthani?
