The Lee Fields

Irish Folk Song #1

As I walked down by the Lee fields

Two dogs and a fine lady walked there with me

We passed the people

We passed the trees

My dogs, my lady and me.

My mind it wandered to times long gone

People and places that are now forgone

Where are they now, the people I’ve loved?

Some in the ground and some up above.

I carry them with me as I walk the Lee fields

I breathe in the air, I drink in the breeze

God is the breath the old folks used say

God is the air all around me.

I watch the river as it flows to the sea

Each thing must pass but for a moment I’m free

The trees and the birds are all singing for me

My dogs gambol, my lady’s with me

The memory of my mother who’s passed away.

If one day you walk the Lee fields

Won’t you remember the people like me?

Who walked here before with their own memories

Before the river took us out to the sea

Walk the Lee Fields,

Walk the Lee Fields,

Walk the Lee Fields with me.
