The Rock

A man kicks a rock
onto the road
A car rushes in and crushes it
He blinks

A man kicks a rock
onto the road
a car rushes in but misses it
He blinks

A man kicks the road
onto the road
A car rushes in but does not miss it
or crush it
The rock flies off the road and into the eye
of a child walking behind the man.
she screams and points at the driver
he cries and points at the walking man
Who is still walking
Earphones in his ears

He does not, and will not understand
Why he and a stranger
Were lodged together
And literally burned down
To the sound of maddening chants
of highly purified hate

His last thought is,
The girl he was to meet will assume he’s late
As usual

He blinks

A man kicks a rock
onto the road
A car rushes in and crushes it
As he texts some girl to tell her he’s near
For some reason he can’t pin down
