The Stone In My Shoe

“You blur my vision and numb my brain,
what are you to which I’m chained?”
“Oh trudge along…” it says, “…everyone does.”
And I do…though I fuss.

“This is supposed to be a happy walk.”
“It will be, if you learn to love me, the rock.”
“But don’t you see this needn’t have to be the case,
if only you allow me to untie my shoelace.”

And only after ten years and four more
was I rid of it as it tore out a hole in my sole.
Although a lot of time from me I let it loot,
Rejoicing am I, for I can now walk barefoot!
