To be or not to be

once they asked her
what would you want to do?
she took some time to ponder awhile
before she could reply
her parents made up their mind for her
and she let it be

a couple of years later they asked
who would you want to be?
she thought about her ideal profile
before she could reply
her family decided for her
and she let it be

again they asked
whom would you like to marry?
she thought of somebody worthwhile
before she could reply
society answered for her
and she let it be

within the boundaries
cut out for her
she lived her life
boxed in
bound to her destiny
and she let it be

but ultimately
the questions
grew bigger and bigger
over the years
nobody answered
and she ceased to be.
