Treading Waters

The mundane and inexplicable
entwine, conjure, and combine
to make living into magic,
throbbing, hilarious, and tragic,
through which we swim and dive
soaked, shivering, but alive,
until beginnings begin to end.

Until faded down to livid bone,
we find ourselves treading water
pausing, still alive, but alone
in an ocean of ending age,
in our singular mindfulness,
suddenly, acutely aware
of dark waters surrounding us.

Those rising waters that will cover
every book, child, joy and lover,
all that we have celebrated and made
sinking beneath time’s tidal flow,
beneath dark waves where all must go.
