Waking, Working, Resting — Repeat

My back,
sore from livelihood,
stiffens into rolled quarters,
and my soul becomes dollar signs.

Nickels and dimes
add up to a deficit of health.
Succumb to the ultimate social responsibility:
bettering the economy over bettering yourself.

The edge of a paycheck
drags through your life
like the chains you wear to work —
furnishing formality, forsaking fulfillment.

Survival defined
by bottom lines
after taxes and
before well-being.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
