Waves

You breathe out into the stillness
As the next wave gathers itself

The gurus would tell you
‘You either ride the wave,
Or get swept under.’

But you know that’s not the whole truth

You’re not some crab
Scuttling for shelter
At every bit of foam
That laps the shore

You can take one wave
Then another
Then a hundred
And still be standing after

You’ve been here before
And so
You let this one wash over you as well

It expends itself in fury and turmoil
And once it’s spent
It’s just you again

That wasn’t the one.
Not every wave is meant to be ridden
And so, you wait
