An architectural behemoth and communist remnant in Kraków, the Hotel Cracovia has become a staple landmark of the local urbanscape and an important element in the collective imaginary of the city.

Recently repurposed to house a branch of the National Museum in Kraków, it hosts special events, temporary exhibitons and features a permanent mosaic titled “City.” At first glance the building still seems neglected, but a closer look reveals a few businesses among which there are some old-school gems and some entirely new local heroes.

Forum Designu and Forum Mody have merged in one place and taken over a whole outer wing of the building. There’s also the Dydo Poster Gallery, which had its opening in October and is currently displaying posters with the theme of “travels.”

What really made an impression, however, was a modest Confectionery (Cukiernia), which has been operating since 1962 (you do the math) and makes the most amazing kremówka (perhaps the best Polish dessert ever) in the whole wide world. If you have a sweet tooth or find yourself catching an exhibit at the Museum, make sure to drop by and ask the very nice lady for a “cream pie.” Poproszę kremówka - “poe-prosheh krem-oof-kuh”.
