PUBG Creator None Too Pleased With Copycat Games

This might come as news in itself, but PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a pretty popular game (maybe you’ve heard of it). So much so, that many other games have followed PUBG’s formula and made their own variants of the battle royale shooter (see Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode for the most popular example).

You know, this game.

Well Mister PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene, is not exactly satisfied with the fact that people are making their own variants of the genre in their games. In an interview with the BBC, Greene let his frustrations be known. “I want other developers to put their own spin on the genre,” Greene said, “not just lift things from our game.”

Yeah, but you can’t dress up as a bush in PUBG.

It’s been a touchy subject, with games like Fortnite gaining much traction in little time to become one of the most streamed games on Twitch rivaling that of PUBG. While many can argue the graphical style and building mechanics, and resource management of Fortnite separate it from PUBG, others argue that the 100-person Battle Royale mode is just a carbon copy.

However, PUBG was not the first battle royale shooter, as mods of ARMA 2 and DayZ and even Minecraft have been doing survival of the fittest style game modes for years prior to Battlegrounds ever taking shape (not to mention Greene’s work on H1Z1: King of the Kill prior to PUBG).
