In our first episode of Policy Over Politics with STAR, I interviewed Representative Edward “Ted” James from Baton Rouge, LA.

Until recently, Representative James was serving District 101 in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He recently resigned from this position after being appointed by President Joe Biden to serve as Regional 6 Director for the Small Business Association.

In our interview, we discuss how STAR has found some of our greatest legislative allies in the Black Caucus and he explains that the reasoning behind that has historical roots with how their ancestors were brought to this country in slave ships and many of the women were raped by slave owners.

In this clip, Representative Edward ‘Ted’ James explains why the Black caucus is a leading ally and supporter of STAR’s mission to support survivors and end sexual violence.

We also talk about the intersection of criminal justice reform with victim advocacy and how it’s misplaced to believe reform measures are anti-victim.

We finish the interview with James talking about the work he hopes will be accomplished in the coming years at the legislature even though he won’t be there leading the charge.
