On Thursday, May 22, I took part in the online webinar organized in London by the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House): Ukraine’s fight for its people: What’s next for the Ukrainian diaspora across Europe?

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has resulted in nearly seven million of its citizens leaving the country, accounting for one in six of the pre-war population. Most refugees left Ukraine within the first few months after the war began. However, people continue to leave the country even now.

According to the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, 104,000 more Ukrainians have left for the EU since the beginning of 2025. As of December 16, 2024, there were 6.254 million Ukrainian refugees in Europe, and as of April 17, 2025, there were already 6.358 million Ukrainians in the EU, according to the government report.

One of the key challenges facing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s government is the return and engagement of these “global Ukrainians” in their country’s recovery and reconstruction.
