The Causes and Consequences of Inequality

If traditional jobs like manufacturing aren’t coming back, how can the economy adapt?

--

In this episode of PolicyCast, HKS Professor David Deming breaks down the challenge of economic inequality into two areas: its causes and its consequences.

Deming, who also teaches at @harvardeducation, has focused his own research on the ways skill development and education impact the labor market. He makes the case that while industries like manufacturing may see growth in the United States, they won’t be returning with the types of jobs that built the American middle class in the 20th century.

He goes on to describe ways in which the American education system can adapt and improve to better prepare the next generation for the needs of a modern economy.
