Do the Comey tapes really exist? Unlikely. I doubt Trump expected the backlash that erupted as a result of his threats that he secretly recorded a conversation with former FBI Director James Comey. A super secret conversation took place in the Oval Office between Donald Trump and James Comey. One of these men was conducting an FBI investigation into the other. After this meeting, Comey gets fired.

Considering that it is completely unheard of, to secretly meet with the person conducting an investigation into you (especially if you are the president), the event has blown out of proportion. Comey claimed Trump demanded him to pledge his allegiance. But it is nothing more than a he said-he said feud. Like Trump does so often, he decided to take the feud to the next level. With President Trump’s back against the wall, Trump tweeted an ominous threat.

On a side note, lets keep in mind that everyone has turned against Trump, except his loyal base. That is why his approval ratings are in the low thirties. In fact, low thirties are quite generous for Trump right now. After the shower of scandals, to think one third of Americans still stands behind him, is quite admirable.

“I think it’s the most serious scandal in the history of our country,” says Allan Lichtman. He is the American political historian who predicted Trump would win.

As a result, Trump must hold on to those supporters. That is all he has left. For the sake of his battered ego, Trump of all people, needs to be around those who admire him. Potentially, this secret meeting could have been the iceberg that sinks the Trump cruise. Who would support a president after such a brazen attempt to persuade someone investigating him?! Imagine if Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama secretly met with the FBI Director, if they were being investigated, and demanded their allegiance!!!!

If you watch Trump’s interview with Lester Holt, you could almost see the moment that the light bulb flashes on over his orange head. His eyebrows leap up his head and he nods, the moment he is graced with this tape epiphany. In a fleeting instant, threatening Comey about some imaginary tapes must have seemed like a great idea. For one thing, the threat would reassure Trump’s loyal minions, that he did nothing wrong. Trumpkins all over the country must have taken a YUGE sigh of relief, when they heard Trump utter that threat. Essentially, if Trump is threatening to release a tape, than he obviously said nothing incriminating during the conversation.

As soon as Trump made the threat though, it tremendously began to backfire. When the senate demanded the tape, the White House suddenly was not as proud and vocal about it as Trump was. At least during every White House press conference since the threat was made, one reporter questions it’s whereabouts. Here are some of Sean Spicer’s responses regarding the tapes:

  • “The president has nothing further to add on that.”
  • “As I mentioned, the president has nothing further to add on that.”
  • “As I’ve said for the third time, there is nothing further to add on that.”
  • “I’m not aware of that.”
  • “The president has made it clear what his position is.”
  • “As I’ve said, Hallie, the president has made it clear what his position is.”
  • “Hallie, I’ve answered the question over and over again the same way.” WashingtonPost article

According to his ex-wife, Trump studied Nazi political propoganda, VanityFair article. Everything our president does was learned in that book. Take this quote, for example.

Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it. — Adolf Hitler

A lot of Trump’s irrational behavior is explained with this quote. His threat about a recorded conversation with Comey certainly, could be justified with his mentor’s logic. Trump lives by this nugget of wisdom. He tells a lie today and it is front page. When he tells the truth tomorrow, it makes page seven.

If our president lied, in an attempt to look good for his supporters, he must not have predicted the massive response. Trump is gradually trying to brace his supporters for the truth. During his Twilight Zone-esque press conference the other day, when he was asked about the Comey tapes, he had a shocking reply. Trump just answered with some more vague nothingness.

“I’m not hinting anything. I’ll tell you about it over a very short period of time….Oh, you’re going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer. Don’t worry.”

Disappointed? Is that directed to the press or to his supporters? Either one, means a totally different thing. As usual, Trump speaks in weird riddles. Like this article, we spend more time deciphering what he means than evaluating his meanings. That is Trump’s intention though. When he is on trial for the massive fraud he committed on our country, his vague remarks won’t be able to be used against him.
