Kevin McCarthy begs for votes to become Speaker of the House, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

As the farce of the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives unravels into a third day, it is increasingly clear that Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, for the second time in his forgettable career, has failed to whip up enough votes to seize the gavel that has been just beyond his grasp for years.

Indeed, the time has passed for the congressman from Fresno to do what is right for his party, for the House of Representatives, and for the country, and step aside so a candidate who is electable by a majority of House members can come forward.

Not that one can be found; the newly elected Republican majority appears to be more interested in grandstanding, infighting and publicly gnawing off its own limbs than getting down to its constitutional mandate to govern and to do the work of the people.

To assist, therefore, I humbly propose a few alternative candidates for the position who would come to the process with a higher probability of success than Mr. McCarthy.

Representative-Elect George Santos (R-NY)
