Destined to lose in ’24, he could have stormed the beaches to save democracy — instead he stayed in the boat

June 6, 2021 will enter into the history books not as just another forgotten Sunday, and the seventy-seventh anniversary of the landings in Normandy, France, otherwise known as D-Day; but it will also be remembered as the “other D-Day.” It was on this day that a an op-ed piece by Senator Joe Manchin ran in a small West Virginia newspaper.

The right to vote is fundamental to our American democracy and protecting that right should not be about party or politics. Least of all, protecting this right, which is a value I share, should never be done in a partisan manner (Voting Against).

Reading these words, the average English-speaker would assume that the author of them is for expanding the vote to as many people as possible. Embedded words are a call to action — the restrictive voting bills passed, or being passed, in 14 states by Republicans are surely the motivation for such magnanimous words. Surely, however, you — and I — would be wrong; and, just like the “D” in D-Day means nothing more than “Day” (Eisenhower decided to call the day when the invasion would be launched, simply “day.”), so too these words penned by Manchin mean zero — zip…
