Does Ted Cruz Even Know What’s Going On In Washington?
He has announced his intention to question Garland about opening a DOJ investigation into a matter that is already under investigation by the DOJ
The confirmation hearing of Judge Merrick Garland has become must-see TV. Four hopefuls for the 2024 Republican presidential candidacy sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Ben Sasse (R-NE) and the man that everyone loves to hate, Ted Cruz (R-TX).
I am giddy with excitement.
Why, you may ask? Because the Senate Judiciary Committee has become a springboard for presidential candidates. Kamala Harris’ sharp questioning of Trump’s SCOTUS picks catapulted her from a virtual unknown to a serious contender for the presidency and then into the office of Vice President. Also on the committee at the time were presidential aspirants, Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Cory Booker (D-NJ).
So we are getting a glimpse into the field of contenders for the 2024 Republican primary. I probably shouldn’t get too excited though. Cotton, Cruz and Hawley all poll at less than 5% according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll.
But we aren’t here to discuss the Republican primary. No, we are here to discuss Ted Cruz and his lack of political skills.
Seriously folks, how did Ted Cruz get this far in politics? He has no political skills or acumen. He always seems to do the opposite of what one would expect a successful politician to do.
Here is his latest blunder. Prior to the Garland hearing, Cruz wrote a letter to the head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Dick Durbin (D-IL), to inform him that he (Cruz) planned to question Garland on whether the DOJ will open an investigation into New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s handling of nursing home deaths from COVID.
For those of you who do not live in the New York area and may not be aware of the issue, Governor Cuomo has been accused by one of his own aides of lying about the number of nursing home deaths from COVID last spring when New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. They were listed as hospital deaths because Cuomo was afraid of being investigated by Trump’s DOJ due to his policy of releasing COVID patients from hospitals and sending them to nursing homes.
Nursing homes, at the time, were not equipped to care for COVID patients and did not have adequate PPE, resulting in nursing home residents becoming infected and dying in droves from the virus.
So why did Cruz write his letter?
First of all, as far as I know, there is no requirement for committee members to clear their questions with the head of the committee before or during hearings.
Second of all, how the hell did Cruz convince eight Republican committee members, including Cotton and Hawley, to sign his letter? Maybe he promised them jobs in his administration when he is elected in 2024?
Thirdly and most importantly, there is already a DOJ investigation into Cuomo’s manipulation of the death data from nursing homes. The investigation was opened in August of 2020.
Let me repeat that. Ted Cruz plans to question Judge Merrick Garland about opening a DOJ investigation into a matter that is already under investigation by the DOJ.
I’m really looking forward to Garland’s answers to Cruz’s questions, aren’t you?
Ted, honey, you need to pay more attention. I know that New York seems exotic and far away to you living in Texas, but for the millions of us living in the Northeast, it’s right in our backyard and we are very much aware of what is going on there. You should be too if you are going to be questioning and voting on candidates for national office.
Do some research before you commit yourself in writing to an action so that you don’t look foolish. Hell, do some research before you take any action. Otherwise you are just making yourself look stupid.
What is even scarier than an ignorant Ted Cruz is an ignorant Ted Cruz who almost beat a more ignorant Trump in 2016. The 2016 Republican primary race looked like a race to the bottom. Will there be a repeat in 2024?
The last time that I wrote about Ted Cruz, I said that his boneheaded decision to ignore the catastrophe in Texas and go on vacation wouldn’t affect his chances in 2024. But if he keeps doing stupid things like that and this latest gaffe, I will have to revise my opinion.
