He Has No Shame
What it means when shame is non-operative
Gary Hart withdrew from the 1988 presidential campaign when an extramarital affair was exposed.
Lewd photos on Twitter led Anthony Weiner to resign from Congress.
The MeToo movement, accusations of unwanted kisses, and a pre-politics photo of Al Franken caused him to resign from the Senate.
But among many questionable antics, Donald Trump was caught bragging about misogynistic behavior and suffered no ill effects.
So what does all this mean? What is the effect on the USA?
Granted that there is a double standard allowing Republicans more leeway than Democrats, but regardless, the overall trend is troubling. Reprehensible behavior that once disqualified a candidate is no longer a problem. Unethical or disgraceful actions are not only forgiven but completely ignored.
Enter George Santos, the poster child for politicians of poor character. This compulsive liar has spun so many yarns about himself, we voters have no real insight into who he is. How can one make a positive contribution to the political leadership of the United States when that person cannot tell the difference between reality and fiction? Will he vote for steel umbrellas to protect against the falling sky? Will appropriations for the Emperor’s clothing be high on his list? How will he react when “Wolf!” echoes through the House?
But his perception of reality and his own lies and misrepresentations have no bearing on his seat in Congress. He is a valuable member of a party with a thin majority because they need him to vote according to their dogma. He is not burdened with any moral center, so will have no difficulties voting whichever way he is told.
His continued presence goes beyond mere obedience. George Santos represents the preferred membership of the GOP. He will never check a fact. He has no need to understand even the simplest issues. He will never question his leadership. He will always favor expedience over substance.
George Santos is a blot on our democracy. Every day he sits in Congress is a disgrace.
But given the current state of American politics, installing Mr. Santos as chair of the Ethics Committee can’t be far off.
Gary Hart, you were ahead of your time.
Shame on us.
