The next presidential election cycle is not quite for some time, even by the standards of America’s time-consuming general election campaign season. Yet for many Americans, it also feels too close. Following the Trump administration’s attempt to conduct a coup, as well the insurrection mounted by his supporters — it feels that Americans are walking on a tight rope in anticipation of the next election, because American democracy itself hangs in the balance in what feels like a fundamental turning point for the future and direction of the United States and the world. This makes the election of 2024 more immediate in people’s minds and more concerning for many than what it looks like on the calendar.

In March, President Biden said that he expects to seek re-election in 2024, something that came up because many people are worried about what will happen should he not. This in addition to reporting that in private, Biden has signaled to his aides that he would serve only a single term. Biden’s statement about seeking re-election could easily be dismissed this early in the game, as many politicians who say they won’t end up running actually do, as Biden himself said he wouldn’t run in the 2020 election.
