It was recently reported in the Las Vegas Review-Journal that legislation has been drafted in Nevada by Gov. Steve Sisolak that would allow tech companies to form “governments that would carry the same authority as a county, including the ability to impose taxes, form school districts and justice courts and provide government services.” The Review-Journal reports that the drafted legislation claims that “traditional local government model is ‘inadequate alone to provide the flexibility and resources conducive to making the State a leader in attracting and retaining new forms and types of businesses,’” and that an “alternative form of local government” is necessary for development of the state’s economy.

A website called Innovation Zone Facts describes the idea for these zones in typical corporate PR language:

“An Innovation Zone is a self-governing community, organized much like a traditional city or county, but wholly focused on the development of innovative and advanced technologies.”

The legal notice at the bottom of that page gives the copyright holder as simply “Innovation Zone Facts,” but searching for the listed address brings up a Facebook page for Blockchains, LLC, a cryptocurrency company that just happens to…
