Kellyanne Conway is Getting Back into Politics
The race to replace Rob Portman, the Republican senator from Ohio is heating up with a familiar face joining one of the campaigns.
First, let’s talk a little bit about why Rob Portman is leaving. He said that he had two reasons. Partisan gridlock and the long Ohio to DC commute. Seriously. He has served in two administrations and both the House and the Senate.
I admire him for knowing when to gracefully leave. He is 65 years old and you know how I feel about term limits and mandatory retirement.
Truthfully though, I think it’s the so-called partisan gridlock that is hastening his exit. And Trump. Many of the old guard Republicans are leaving office because they are unhappy with the direction of the Republican Party under Trump.
Trump is enjoying the process of picking Portman’s successor.
Back in March Trump hosted a fundraiser for Max Miller who is running to replace Rep. Anthony Gonzalez also of Ohio. In attendance at the fundraiser, hoping for Trump’s endorsement were four candidates for Portman’s seat.
During the cocktail hour, Trump invited all four into a quick 15 minute meeting. They were seated around a round table. Trump asked each person, Apprentice-style, to describe how the race was going.
Let’s meet the contestants, shall we?
First up to speak was Jane Timken who quit her job as Chair of the GOP in Ohio to run for office. Trump had selected her for the state Chair job. He also reminded her that she defended Gonzalez after he voted to impeach Trump.
He must have liked her answer to that because Trump wanted to endorse her in the race until he was talked out of it by Don Jr. supposedly because he thought it was too early in the race for his father to be making endorsements.
Next up was Josh Mandel, the former state Treasurer. Trump questioned how committed he was to the race, reminding him that he dropped out of the senate race in 2018 because of his wife’s ill health.
I didn’t think that it was possible to hate Trump more than I already do but criticizing someone for dropping out of a run for office due to family illness is beyond the pale. Of course Trump himself would never consider dropping anything due to family illness.
Mandel reminded Trump that he had endorsed him in 2016 before any of the other people sitting around the table and has been raising money for his re-election campaign.
Then it was Mike Gibbons’ turn. He reminded Trump that he had donated to him even though he (Trump) had backed Gibbons’ opponent in the 2018 senate primary.
The last to speak was Bernie Moreno who is a businessman. He didn’t have much to say.
My guess is that it was because he was still in negotiations with Kellyanne Conway. Yes, the former campaign manager and then White House Counselor for Trump has joined Moreno’s campaign.
I’m assuming that she has patched things up with her daughter.
Conway says that she has joined the campaign because Moreno is “not a politician. He’s a conservative, a political outsider, and a successful businessman just like President Donald J. Trump. He has lived the American Dream and wishes to protect it for future generations.”
Of course we have never been able to believe anything that she says.
Moreno himself is running as a Trump candidate even though he doesn’t (yet) have Trump’s endorsement and he described Trump as a lunatic and a maniac in 2016.
These two really deserve each other, don’t they?
Conway has been very coy about her communications with Trump since joining Moreno’s campaign.
Nope, still not believing her.
Conway’s presence is being taken as a sign that Trump plans to endorse Moreno because she wouldn’t join the campaign if he weren’t.
Conway and Moreno were at Mar-a-Lago last week for the Republican donors retreat on April 10. They met privately with Trump more than once.
Looks to me like an endorsement is in the works.
And that Conway is getting back into politics. Getting her feet wet with Moreno’s senate campaign, then after the election in 2022, moving smoothly into the presidential race, presumably working on Trump’s campaign again.
Yet another indication that Trump is planning on running in 2024.
I’m trying to decide if Conway genuinely enjoys working for Trump and his sycophants or is just a glutton for punishment. In 2016, she could claim that she didn’t know what she was getting into, but now she clearly does.
She knows Trump and how he works. I’m amazed that she wants to put herself through the wringer again.
