I’ve been hearing on news shows that the Republicans have no platform. Being the research addict that I am, I decided to check this out, so this morning I Googled “Republican” and “platform.”

I weeded through a number of sites where the search results were for “no platform” before coming across one that I thought would surely have all the details about a Republican platform: The Republican National Committee. However, what I found on the RNC site were only some vague references to …

… “liberty”

On the RNC site, you can read that the Republican party “was founded in 1854 for the purpose of ending slavery.” This is partly true, but misleading. A number of sites, including History.com, state that the Republican aim was not to abolish slavery; rather, it was to keep new Western states from becoming slave states and aligning with the South, which would weaken the political power of the North.

So, it was power for the party, not liberty for all, that drove Thomas Jefferson, Jacob Merritt Howard, Horace Greeley, et al to create a mechanism to keep power in the hands of those who already had that power.
