Mike Pompeo Misappropriated Government Funds While Secretary of State
Mike Pompeo, the former Secretary of State under Trump, is in a wee bit of trouble. Seems he, or more accurately his wife, used State Department personnel to run personal errands and do other personal things for both the mister and the missus while the mister was the Secretary of State.
This is considered misappropriation of government funds since the taxpayers were paying the salaries of the State Department personnel while they were doing things like sending out the Pompeo’s Christmas cards, taking care of their dog and purchasing hostess gifts for private dinners that the Pompeo’s attended.
And why is this important? Because Pompeo is likely to run for president in 2024.
The revelations are contained in a report compiled by the inspector general. The investigation into Pompeo’s misbehavior was initiated in 2020 after Scott Linick, who was the inspector general at the time, was fired by Trump at the request of Pompeo. Linick was investigating Pompeo’s role in an emergency arms sale to Saudi Arabia.
Linick was the fifth inspector general to be fired within a period of six weeks in 2020. His successor, Stephen J. Ackard, resigned after three months with no reason given.
Ah, the good old days. Remember when people used to get fired for doing their jobs? Because doing their jobs meant exposing the fact that Trump and his lackeys were bending rules and breaking laws? Or people getting fired for not demonstrating sufficient loyalty to Trump?
Kinda hard to imagine now that we are back to normal. Sometimes I feel like I have woken up from a bad nightmare to the bright light of a warm spring day.
The so-called Deep State is having its revenge on Trump and his flunkys. After Linick was fired, an investigation that was started by Linick was continued and lo and behold, it was discovered that Pompeo and his wife saved themselves the expense of hiring personal assistants and used taxpayer funded employees as personal assistants instead.
From my reading, it was mostly his wife who gave the orders. And she was obeyed because the State Department employees were under the impression that her demands had been approved by her husband and therefore were coming from him, not his wife who had no authority over them.
The employees did what they were instructed to do despite the fact that it was illegal because in those days, you did not say no to any of Trump’s officials if you wanted to keep your job.
No action can be taken against Pompeo because he is no longer in office. Instead, the report makes recommendations about changes that should be made to prevent this from happening again.
Despite the fact that there are already rules on the books forbidding this behavior. Thanks to Trump and his indifference to laws and policies, those rules now have to be clarified or re-written.
The misuse of government resources will be an issue if Pompeo does run in 2024. At first I thought that it would be interesting to see how he excuses his behavior but then I realized that because he can’t be punished for it, he will use the lack of punishment as evidence that he did nothing wrong.
Just as Trump would do and has done.
The reason I dwell on people like Pompeo and Kellyanne Conway is because we are in danger of forgetting how bad it was under Trump. It’s been less than 100 days since Biden was inaugurated and the memories of the Trump reign of terror are already fading away.
We can’t let that happen. We must never forget so that it can’t ever happen again.
Because Trump and his ilk want it to happen again.
When we see former Trump officials like Kellyanne and Pompeo stepping into the political arena, we should be frightened. Frightened that if they are successful, Trumpism will reign supreme again.
Our democracy survived Trump but just barely. Biden is valiantly trying to reunite the country, heal it from the pandemic and move it forward into a more equitable future.
Like a patient who has been gravely ill, our country is very fragile right now. It will take more than one presidential term to complete our recovery.
I honestly don’t think that our democracy would survive another four years of Trump or someone like him. So we must remain vigilant, always on guard against those who want to destroy our democracy and replace it with a repressive regime that functions for the benefit of those in charge and their friends.
