Republicans Gave Trump an Award
I’ve resisted the temptation to write about the spring Republican donor retreat that took place over the weekend of April 9 and 10. It’s been hard because Trump made such a fool of himself that it just begged to be written about.
It was when they gave Trump an award and tweeted that photo of him holding the little silver bowl with a creepy grin on his face that I lost all self-control.
My apologies in advance.
The Republicans are trying desperately to hold on to Trump’s supporters by placating him. They have demeaned themselves to the point where they are treating Trump like a combination of mob boss and feral animal that may turn on them at any time.
Case in point, the recent donor retreat held at the Four Seasons resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The highpoint of the retreat was a speech by Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club.
Here’s where the mob boss part comes in. The Republicans had to rent Trump’s private club so that he would make a speech to their donors. In other words, they paid him to speak. But not directly. They laundered the money through the rental of the club.
You know, like the mob launders its ill-gotten gains from its illegal businesses. Trump learned this at the knee of his first attorney, Roy Cohn, who also happened to be a mob lawyer.
Trump’s speech was supposed to be the climax of the event. With most former presidents, that would make sense. Who wouldn’t be willing to be bussed a few miles from the Four Seasons to Mar-a-Lago to hear a former president speak on the future of the party and other topics that are near and dear to the hearts of Republican donors?
Except this former president (I’m going to keep using that phrase as often as I can because Trump hates it and has forbidden his toadies from using it) is Trump and all he wants to talk about are topics that are near and dear to his own heart.
Like the stolen 2020 election. He just can’t get past it. It’s all he thinks about. It’s all he talks about. When he’s not talking about how prominent Republicans betrayed him, that is.
In his speech, Trump used some choice words to describe Mitch McConnell, the most memorable being “dumb son of a bitch” with “stone cold loser” a close second. He also went all mob boss on McConnell accusing McConnell of not thanking him “properly” for appointing his wife, Elaine Chao to his cabinet.
In Trump’s mind, he appointed McConnell’s wife as his Labor Secretary as a favor to McConnell not because she had experience in a previous administration as Transportation Secretary. And then McConnell would “owe” him.
Bet you didn’t know that our government was being run on mob principles for four years, did you?
Trump also whined about McConnell not doing enough to defend him against impeachment in February.
Pence, Trump’s vice president, is still in Trump’s bad graces for certifying Biden’s win instead of illegally discarding electoral votes for Biden. Trump claimed he was “disappointed.”
By the way, “disappointed” in mob speak means “get rid of” which the mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6 tried to do. They set up a gallows outside before storming the building to search for Pence. Apparently the plan was to drag him out and hang him.
Sounds like Trump is still trying to find someone to execute Pence for him.
He said that Pence “lacked the courage to send the Electoral College certification back to the states.” In other words, he called Pence a coward which in Trump’s world is almost as bad as being a loser.
Trump’s rant lasted for 50 minutes. The audience reaction was subdued. I’m sure he was very disappointed that he didn’t get the usual wild applause and screaming cheers that he is accustomed to.
The highlight of the evening, at least for Trump, was the presentation of the inaugural Champion for Freedom award presented by Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) on behalf of the National Republican Senatorial Committee of which he is the head.
Take special note of the word “inaugural” which means first or beginning. That’s why you’ve never heard of this award before. It didn’t exist before this weekend’s event.
Trump loves awards, even fake ones. The most famous of his fake awards was a fake Time magazine cover of Trump with the headline: “TRUMP IS HITTING ON ALL FRONTS … EVEN TV!”, a reference to his reality show, The Apprentice. Trump hung copies of this fake magazine cover in seven of his golf clubs.
Time magazine asked him to take them down.
But no one is asking Trump to remove this newest award. It’s the real deal. Kinda like a child’s participation trophy. And that grin. I don’t know about you, but Trump’s grin gives me the creeps.
Did you see the photo of him with his grandkids at Easter? The poor kids look terrified.
Trump’s smile just doesn’t look natural. Or normal. He is someone who should never, ever smile.
Back to the matter at hand. How to keep Trump happy so that the Republican Party can hang on to Trump’s base. They desperately need those votes in the 2022 midterms to take back the House and the Senate.
At the same time, they are trying to carefully ease Trump out of the leadership role that he is desperately trying to hang on to. It’s a delicate balancing act.
So they keep him busy and happy making speeches and accepting shiny participation trophies in hopes that he won’t turn on them like a feral animal.
