I’ve often said my criticism for liberals is harsher than it is for conservatives because I expect more from liberals. I don’t expect much from conservatives, so I’m not often let down. There’s been an odd twist lately, though. I feel let down by conservative columnist Debra Saunders.

I’ve read Saunders’ columns in my local newspaper for years. I live in a liberal college town and her columns often appear as counter point. I’d wager they run, in part, because the editor is trying to balance out the editorial page. Often, her columns zero in on the particular liberal penchant to over dramatize an issue, and Saunders frequently succeeds in deflating their overwrought outrage.

Feisty and true to her political leanings, I’ve enjoyed her columns over the years, even when I disagree. Mind you, this was only an occasional read. I was not as familiar with her as I am other writers.

Lately though, I began following her on Twitter and read more of her columns and the type of articles and thinkers she follows. In short, someone that I appreciated as welcome relief has fallen in my estimation.
