Trump Signs the Relief Bill Too Late to Help Millions of Struggling Americans
Trump belatedly signed the COVID Relief bill on Sunday evening. Unfortunately, the extended unemployment benefits that millions of Americans depend on ran out the day before. States are unable to update their systems to restart weekly benefits to suffering families until next week.
To a wealthy man like Trump, missing one check is no big deal but for families who have exhausted all of their resources and now live week to week, it is a disaster.
I’ve been there. You know exactly how much you will receive. You have budgeted accordingly. So much for groceries, so much for utilities, so much for car payments. Suddenly, 25% of that money is missing.
It doesn’t matter that you will receive that money at the back end. You need it now, not later. You have bills to pay, mouths to feed.
Trump held up signing the bill in hopes that he could blackmail Congress into increasing the one time payout to $2,000. Congress refused to budge. Trump had to sign the bill to avoid being perceived as a loser.
Americans suffered just to satisfy Trump’s ego.
Let me remind you again how much people in other countries are receiving monthly from their governments:
Netherlands — 90% of salary
Italy — 80% of salary
UK- 80% of salary
Denmark — 75% of salary
France — 70% of salary
Ireland — 70% of salary
Spain — 70% of salary
Germany — 67% of salary
Canada — $1,433 per month
And they don’t have to worry about going bankrupt if they are hospitalized for COVID. Their governments pay for their healthcare.
To date, the American government has provided a single payment for $1,200 and just approved an additional $600 for a total of $1,800 to cover 9 months of living expenses. That is obscene.
Especially when you consider how much we are paying our representatives in Congress who have been receiving their full paychecks while we have had to wait in line for food:
Senators — $174,000
Senate Majority Leader (Mitch McConnell) — $193,400
Senate Minority Leader (Chuck Schumer) — $193,400
Senate President Pro Tem (Chuck Grassley) — $193,400
House Representatives — $174,000
Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi) — $223,500
Don’t forget that Mitch McConnell is double dipping. His wife, Elaine Chao, is Transportation Secretary. Her income is $199,700. That’s a combined income of $393,100. All paid for by Americans who have no income this week.
Have any of them refused their taxpayer funded salaries until this emergency is over? Of course not. The greedy bastards have collected every cent and enjoyed health insurance, also taxpayer funded, which is better than any health insurance that is available to the rest of us.
Most of them don’t need their salaries. Let’s look at their net worth.
Nancy Pelosi — Net Worth $114 million
Mitch McConnell — Net Worth $22.5 million
Chuck Schumer — Net Worth $900,000
Chuck Grassley — Net Worth $3 million
These are the people who thought that $1,200 was too much so they reduced it to $600. And the unemployed who are struggling should only receive $300 a week extra instead of $600.
Why are Americans not more outraged about this? Why are we allowing millionaires to dole out tiny allowances to us while collecting handsome salaries that they don’t even need?
The entire House and Senate needs to be voted out of office and replaced. We need to impose term limits and mandatory retirement ages for elected officials and Supreme Court judges so that no one gets too comfortable.
We need to take back our government so that we stop getting screwed.
