We Don’t Talk About…Anything

Better to ban it than talk about it

Forget “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” It's just a Disney tune. But here in the good old United States of America, we have embraced that Disney theme. We don’t talk about gay people, we don’t talk about climate change, and we certainly don’t talk about the real history of the United States.

I’m seventy years old, and I feel trapped in a country I no longer believe in. Trapped in the sense that I’d be leaving my children and grandchildren behind, probably my wife too — she’d never abandon her grandchildren.

What happened to this country? When did we become a people who would prefer to bury our problems than face them? Florida seems to lead the nation in sweeping controversial topics under the rug of banished language. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed into law what has been dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” legislation. It bans Florida school districts from encouraging classroom discussions about sexual orientation or sexual identity. Some believe that the law will lead to “outing” an LGBTQ student and actually promote harassment.

And guess what? Some 39 other states think that’s just peachy and want to copy the law to discourage the normalization of alternative lifestyles. Forget about learning, understanding, and…
