Where Will Trump Live After He Leaves the White House?

Legally, Mar a Lago cannot be used as a private residence

Although he hasn’t formally conceded the election yet, both Trump and his wife have been making preparations for moving out of the White House. Renovations are being done on their private quarters at Mar a Lago and Melania has been looking for an appropriate school in Florida for their son Barron.

There’s just one problem.

Mar a Lago cannot legally be used as a private residence. Trump purchased the property in 1985. By 1993, he was in financial distress and wanted to turn the property into a private club that would generate revenue for his cash strapped empire.

The town of Palm Beach and his neighbors did not want a club because of the traffic it would generate. Eventually, they came to an agreement with Trump allowing him to create his club but only if he did not also use the estate as a private residence.

They hammered out a legal agreement that in addition to barring the property’s use as a residence, restricted club membership to 500, half of which had to either live or work in Palm Beach. Club members who wanted to extend their stay at the club could do so for no more than 7 days at a time, on 3 non-consecutive…
