Republican retirements from the Senate are an added wrinkle this time

Five Republican senators have announced their retirements complicating the 2022 midterms for both parties. Midterm elections are famously bad for the party that holds the White House, in this case the Democrats who currently have slim majorities in both the House and Senate.

The Democrats want to at least hold on to their majorities in both Houses and ideally expand them while the Republicans would like to take back control of the Senate and defeat enough Democrats to take control of the House.

Why the Retirements are Bad for the Republicans

Any time you lose an incumbent in a race, it makes holding that seat more difficult. They have name recognition with the voters. They may have brought jobs or funding from Washington to benefit their constituents. They may have cast critical votes on issues important to the people who elected them. They have history with their constituents, are very popular and have been re-elected sometimes for decades.
