Republicans Plan to Kill Jan. 6 Investigation with Death By 1,000 lies

GOP legislators want us to forget deaths, injuries, video, arrests

One thing about Republicans is they stick together, even if they’re selling a line of BS. This was evident during the House Oversight hearings on the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection on Wednesday. I sat through about four hours of the hearings and it was an exercise in restraint not to throw something heavy at my computer screen when watching the debacle.

It was a torturous experience because Republicans came determined to act as if nothing happened. I’ve written about this before and so I wasn’t surprised, but I wasn’t expecting the level of gaslighting that was on his display. It seemed every Republican at the hearing had the same go-to script. And the script read, “The Capitol Insurrection never happened.” They all followed the party line.

Denying the truth

Some of the responses were absurd and insulting. Former Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller changed his testimony hours after he had written it down. He blamed the attack on the “media” and also saId he wouldn’t have done anything differently. That’s when Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) lost it and called him “ridiculous.”

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) managed to lie about a lie during the hearing. He said: “There was no insurrection. To call it an insurrection is a bald-faced lie.” He also said the rioters were more like “tourists.” And Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) suggested the rioters were not really Trump supporters.

Republican legislators are trying to get us to unsee what we’ve witnessed. But there’s too much evidence in the form of video, social media and legal documents. We aren’t going to let this go. This crime happened and it’s going to be prosecuted.

However, it seems Republicans are using the Nazi propaganda technique of repeating a lie until it becomes the truth. It’s already working on their followers. Several Republican voters have already parroted the line about the attack being staged by undercover antifa activists. This is an easily disproved lie. Apart from wearing MAGA gear, many of the rioters had social media profiles that indicated they were long-time Trump supporters.

Once I figured out that most of the GOPers at the hearing were determined to obfuscate the truth, I came up with a strategy to watch it. As soon as I figured out that the speaker was a Republican, I hit the mute button until their speech was over. When a Democrat spoke, I unmuted my computer, because I knew they were at least trying to determine the truth.

Too much evidence

However, the Republican Party’s giant gaslighting operation isn’t going to work. The FBI’s not taking the Capitol insurrection lightly. There are currently around 500 investigations open and several insurrectionists are now sitting in jail, including some Proud Boys who dedicated their lives to a gold-plated conman. Once they didn’t get the expected pardons, some finally realized they’d been following a false idol.

“So glad he was able to pardon a bunch of degenerates as his last move and sh*t on us on his way out,” said jailed Proud Boy Ethan Nordean after he watched Trump skip the White House and leave him and his fellow dupes rotting in jail. “F*ck you Trump you left us on the battle field bloody and alone.”

However, Democrats are also not taking this gaslighting sitting down. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was blunt in her reaction to GOP propaganda. On Jan. 6, insurrectionists roamed the halls calling her name.

“Well, I don’t know [of] a normal day around here when people are threatening to hang the vice president of the United States or shoot the speaker in the forehead or disrupt and injure so many police officers,” said Pelosi. “I don’t consider that normal. Multiple people were killed. Over 140 police officers were [injured]. A gallows was put up. Attackers chanted, ‘Hang the vice president.’”

Tales from the frontline

Even more poignant is testimony from Capitol police officers who were on the scene and engaged in hand-to-hand combat with deranged Trump cultists. Several officers died and some lost fingers and an eye. Some Capitol officers still suffer from emotional and physical injuries from the attack.

In a CNN interview, Officer Harry Dunny said it was frustrating to hear Republican legislators describe the attackers as “peaceful.”

“They were there with a purpose to hurt people and they had bad intentions,” said Dunn. “It just hurts to believe that people can think that it was a normal day, it was a ‘tour.’ It’s hurtful.”

Republican legislators are trying to get us to unsee what we’ve witnessed. But there’s too much evidence in the form of video and social media. We aren’t going to let this go. This crime happened and it’s going to be prosecuted.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.,) who seems to have rediscovered her spine and conscience, said GOPers are trying to obscure the truth because it will reveal that some of them were involved in planning the attack. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.,) one of the few remaining sane Republicans, compared his party members’ comments to North Korean propaganda.

Although the House has agreed to a bipartisan committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack, I don’t have much confidence going forward. (House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said he hasn’t read the bill yet.) One party is trying its hardest to make sure the truth about the Capitol attack never sees the light of day.
