Two recent Citizenship Politics columns dealt with the slowdown of mail-in ballots by USPS (past the deadline for them to be counted) and President Donald Trump’s strategies for capturing the electors.
The Trump Campaign will try to disqualify as many mail-in ballots as possible. Trump has personally implied through his public statements that armed civilians should monitor polling stations. Armed militias have already made statements that they will not allow the Democrats to steal the election from Trump. The public has no way of knowing the full scale of these efforts. …
After weeks of being pressed hard on the issue of packing the federal courts to compensate for Republican efforts to turn the judiciary into a functioning arm of their party, Joe Biden finally promised an answer before the election. So, in an interview on the CBS news program 60 Minutes he said he would…establish a commission of constitutional scholars to look into it.
This was obviously not the answer a lot of progressives were hoping for. And no one is ever thrilled by the idea of a politician promising a “blue ribbon commission” when asked to take a stand on an important issue. …

The Senate Judiciary Committee begins hearings Mon., Oct. 12, on the appointment of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Her seat on the court will solidify its already very conservative majority.
National polls have shown that most citizens do not wish her, or anyone, to be appointed until after the presidential election. A few Democrats have argued that if Barrett is appointed, seats should be added to the Supreme Court to balance its philosophical views.
President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence both asked their Democratic opponents in the recent debates whether they would pack the court, presumably with liberals. Both former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris danced around the issue, never answering the question. …

I am a 22-year-old leftist. For the last decade of my political life, liberals have called me a naive idealist. From debate tournaments, to Democratic caucuses, to dinner-table-debates, I have endured dozens of lectures from life-long Democrats who see my radicalism as a dangerous folly of youth — something to be lauded at times, scolded at others, and ultimately, outgrown.
Treating leftism like a toddler’s mistake, these Democrats have told me bedtime stories warning of the dangers and failures leftism has wrought in American political life.
When I was 3-years-old, naive leftists who voted for Nader over Gore handed the country to Bush and thrust the nation into war. …
On June 17, 2020, the Supreme Court ruled that the 700,000 immigrants, who were minors when they were brought into the US without immigration papers, would continue to be protected from being deported. The media largely focused on the humane impact the decision would have on the many lives whose future depended on it. But the decision seemed to rely more on a nuanced legal interpretation of the Trump Administration’s failure to follow the proper procedures to invalidate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA). A reading of the decision reflects both were considered. …
