Cutting through the headlines. Demystifying the future. Creating sensible policy.

Now more than ever, it’s time to rethink such extravagant military spending.

Much like the foreign policy that it will be used to impose upon U.S. military targets, the development of the F-35 has spanned several administrations. With a price tag on development topping $1.7 trillion, it is apparently now “the most expensive weapons program in the world and Lockheed Martin’s biggest revenue generator,” according to Investor’s Business Daily. Pretty exciting stuff, for what amounts to a failed project.

David Axe explains in Forbes that the original goal of the project was to develop an “affordable, lightweight fighter to replace hundreds of Cold War-vintage F-16s and complement a small future fleet of…

I often write updates about the coronavirus pandemic and it’s a depressing topic. Every week you’re amending the casualty list. And because of this, I’ve become intimately familiar with the United States’ coronavirus death toll which recently passed the 500,000-mark.

As I’ve written before, America officially has the worst coronavirus casualty list in the entire world. The American people decided to let a reality show star become president. Donald Trump used this opportunity to enrich himself and displayed his cluelessness on how to do the job. Hence, we have the worst casualties from COVID-19.

However, it’s interesting to note that…

Conservative conference featured a Nazi symbol

When I first saw stories flashing around Twitter that the recently completed Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) featured a Nazi logo embedded in the stage design, my naturally-skeptical mind said, this can’t be true. I loathe conspiracy theorists and their obsession with hidden symbolism.

But after further examination and seeing several Twitter posts, I learned the logo, an odal rune, had also been featured at some white nationalist rallies. That convinced me that it really was a Nazi logo.

As a political junkie, I consume all forms of political news. So naturally, I’m watching the annual right-wing lovefest called CPAC. The acronym stands for Conservative Political Action Conference. But this year, there’s something ominous and even sad about it.

Even though the GOP lost both houses of Congress and the last presidential election, the party is still solidifying around ex-President Donald Trump, the person who led them to disaster. Utah Sen. Mitt Romney said Trump would clinch the 2024 nomination — if he decides to run.

This year’s convention has already turned into a parade of PR disasters. CPAC…

Nigeria, the land of my birth, is a very complicated country. The most populous country (190 million people) in Africa is a former British colony divided by Christianity and Islam and featuring about 200 different ethnic groups all squeezed together and trying to form a nation.

Not surprisingly, the country has been ridden with ethnic conflicts in the past. There are three major ethnic groups which vie for power in Nigeria: the Yoruba, the Igbo and the Hausa-Fulani. During the early years of Nigeria, the Hausa-Fulani group managed to wrangle control through political maneuvering and military juntas. And it was…

The liberal and the conservative, how do we sort them? How do we tell them apart in the wild? There may be personality cues or clothing cues, charming little glimpses into political allegiance. We can make a sport of it, weighing geographical location with music tastes with speech patterns.

Americans, with our fashionably pragmatic two-party system are in a unique position to deposit people rather decisively into one of two camps; this is compared to our European counterparts with their fuzzy, fractured multi-party apparatuses. …

Medical, legal experts say Trump is liable for half a million deaths

We just passed a grim milestone. Coronavirus deaths have officially hit the 500,000-mark. And according to The Lancet, a British medical journal, many of those fatalities could have been avoided.

“Many of the cases and deaths were avoidable. Instead of galvanising the US populace to fight the pandemic, President Trump publicly dismissed its threat (despite privately acknowledging it), discouraged action as infection spread, and eschewed international cooperation,” said The Lancet in its Feb. 10 issue. “His refusal to develop a national strategy worsened shortages of personal protective equipment and diagnostic tests. …

Several years ago, I said I would celebrate the day that far-right radio show host Rush Limbaugh died. And yesterday, true to my words, I did celebrate. His death made the world a better place. Looking back on Limbaugh’s career, he changed the media and made a lot of money, but his legacy is also racism, bigotry and bullying vulnerable members of society.

He referred to Chelsea Clinton, who was 12 at the time, as “the White House dog.” And he also accused actor Michael J. Fox, who was suffering from Parkinson’s disease, of exaggerating his illness. In 2016, former…

Proud Boys march towards the Capitol on Jan. 6. (Elvert Barnes/Wikipedia.)

After running wild for several years, the Proud Boys, one of the nation’s most high-profile white nationalist groups, seems to be falling apart. Gavin McInnes, the group’s founder, stepped down in 2018 after the legal ramifications of being in charge of a street-fighting group finally hit him. And Enrique Tarrio, who stepped up to replace McInnes, is now in hot water after it was revealed that he was an FBI informant.

This didn’t surprise me. …
