AdEx is at the forefront of experimenting with application specific chains, or dAppChains, and the team is now announcing its progress on an implementation of the AdEx protocol built on Substrate. AdEx is also developing the AdEx Registry on Substrate and intends to migrate the Registry and deploy a Polkadot ‘parachain’ at genesis, benefiting from the security and consensus mechanism of the Polkadot network while being interoperable with other networks (including Ethereum).

Substrate is an open source development framework that makes it easier than ever to build blockchains. The Polkadot protocol is built using Substrate, and Substrate chains will have the ability to easily onboard into the Polkadot network. Read more about AdEx’s experience with Substrate.

The AdEx team chose Polkadot and Substrate because the registry needs to be able to sustain high transaction throughput in case of a challenge, and because of the upgradability and governance benefits of the Polkadot ecosystem.

As the AdEx explained in a previous blog post, “We believe that application-specific chains are great because they provide horizontal scalability in a very natural way, and give us more flexibility, which in turn allows for better UX.”

The next steps in building out the AdEx instance on Substrate are:

  1. Launching a testnet
  2. Improving the implementation with tooling, JS libraries, CLI, etc.

Co-Founder and CEO of AdEx Ivo Georgiev said about the progress, “We were pleasantly surprised to find out that the Substrate implementation of the AdEx protocol was much easier than we initially expected. This implementation is a major step forward for us, and we are thrilled to see how it develops further.”

About AdEx

The AdEx protocol facilitates trading of advertising space/time, as well as the subsequent verification and proof that it actually occurred. It covers all interactions between publishers, advertisers and end users. The protocol combines traditional peer-to-peer technology, cryptography and blockchain.

The AdEx team also develops an open source dApp built on top of the Ethereum implementation of the protocol, available at https://beta.adex.network.
