Polkadot Buildathon: India is an India-focused hackathon that aims to enable coders and entrepreneurs to create the technology needed for the next phase of the internet, with a prize pool of US$14,000.
Presented by Web3 Foundation Switzerland in association with Lumos Labs, it offers workshops and networking opportunities with leading international blockchain developers, running from March 30th to May 30th, 2021.
The Polkadot Network was launched in May 2020 by Web3 Foundation, a Swiss organization dedicated to supporting the research and development of Web 3.0. Co-founded by Dr. Gavin Wood, co-founder and former CTO of Ethereum, Polkadot is a next-generation blockchain and layer-0 protocol that unites multiple specialized blockchains into a unified, scalable network. Polkadot is built using Substrate, a blockchain-building framework that makes it easy to create a blockchain optimized for any use case.

In recognition of India’s reputation at the forefront of software development, Polkadot Buildathon: India aims to support the development of a thriving blockchain ecosystem on the continent. The hackathon will provide workshops and networking opportunities to teach participants the skills to develop blockchain technology and generate big ideas for the decentralized web.
Focusing on Substrate, Polkadot and Kusama, Polkadot’s canary network, the hackathon caters to both developers who are new to blockchain and those who want to build on their experience in this area. The Polkadot Buildathon will run over nine weeks in two phases:
- The ideation phase: Starting on March 30th, training workshops will be provided to teach participants basic node deployment and help them decide what they want to build — from building a blockchain to creating developer tooling, visualizations, or any type of application for the Polkadot ecosystem.
- The building phase: From April 26th participants can join workshops and receive advice from the Web3 Foundation and Parity Technologies teams to support their project. Detailed tutorials will also be provided to help them through the process. At the end of this phase on June 13th, participants will have the opportunity to present their work to a panel of international judges.

Second prize: US$3,000

Third prize. US$2,000
- Two Polkadot engraved Ledger devices

Additionally, the top 20 teams will receive US$200.
How to participate
The Polkadot Buildathon: India is open to individuals or teams. While it is primarily aimed at developers in India, registration is also open for participants from other countries.
Applications are welcome up to April 24, 2021. Register via Devfolio, then create a Devfolio account or log in with your existing Devfolio account.
