I’m excited to announce that Poly Canyon Ventures has awarded it’s first clean-tech grant to Polymuir, an algae bioplastic company based in San Luis Obispo, CA. Polymuir’s mission is to accelerate the industry transition to sustainable materials using algae. The company offers a variety of algae-based bioplastics including: coatings, adhesives, and foams. Poly Canyon Ventures awarded this grant from its Climate Changer’s Fund, a fund that invests in clean-tech and sustainability related companies.

When you think of venture capital, plastics usually isn’t the first thing to come to mind. It’s boring, it’s old, and has razor thin margins. However, Polymuir is innovating the space with algae-based plastics, helping businesses transition to more sustainable and eco-friendly materials. Currently, the company is focusing on algae-based polyurethane coatings but hopes to produce other algae-based materials. Bioplastics have the advantage of reducing fossil fuel resources and CO2 levels, making it an important innovation in the $250 billion global plastic packaging market.

At Poly Canyon Ventures, we actively look for entrepreneurs that are enabling the future of sustainability, companies that are committed to conservation and preservation. I believe Polymuir’s focus on sustainable materials and drive to continuously innovate in their space makes them a great addition to the PCV portfolio. We’re excited to help Polymuir continue to thrive.

The future is looking bright…
