When My Husband Spends the Night with His Girlfriend

I am lounging on the king-sized bed, having brushed my teeth and washed my face before heading to sleep.

I smile up at my husband.

“I love you.”

He bends down to give me a kiss. “I love you, too.” He hovers over my face and inhales. “You smell like roses.”

“See you in the morning,” I say.

Tonight, my husband is sleeping with his girlfriend in her room at the other end of the hallway, and I am sleeping alone.

I never thought this would be my life—not only sharing my husband with other women as a polyamorist—that I could do—but also sharing my home, my meals, my car, my clothes, my life with another woman. This is where polyamory has led me, for better or for worse.

He will climb into her bed with her. They will likely trade sweet nothings. Perhaps their legs with intertwine, or he will steal the covers. Maybe she will rest her head on his chest, or he will spoon her. They may be intimate that night or in the morning, or both. I don’t know, but as I think about it, I don’t fret, and I am not angry or jealous.

Sometimes, I am the one who suggests the overnight, saying to him “Do you want to sleep…
