“Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;”

W. B. Yeats, “The Second Coming”

What a marvelous poem is Yeats’ The Second Coming. It popped into my head the moment I considered that the numerical, five, begins the second level of passive, following after four’s result/active. The first level, passive, you’ll remember, was two.

Anyway, I envisioned the second level as spiraling up out of the first level. The number eight, then, will be the third-level-passive up the spiral.

I’ve learned to listen to these hearkenings. So I included, just for the fun of it, a partial first stanza. If you want to read the entire poem, here it is. [Better yet, Whoa!, I just listened to a dramatic rendering of the poem, and, OMG, you need to hear this!]

And now, on to the Fives:

The Five of Wands
